 SPELLINGS Year 2 Writing Objectives

Our spellings this week are words ending in 'il'. The children can find these spellings on the Spelling Shed website. All the children should have their login details to access this online. (https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/)

pencil, fossil, nostril, pupil, April, gerbil, lentil, evil, anvil, basil

It would be good practice for them to include each word in a different sentence, to demonstrate that they understand how to use the word in context. Remember to underline the word that they have included in the sentence.

MATHS  Year 2 Maths Objectives

In Year 2, children are expected to be secure in their number bonds to 10. This means they should be able to instantly recall any two numbers that add up to 10, such as 2 + 8, 4 + 6, or 1 + 9, without needing to count. Please continue to practise these number bonds regularly with your child. In addition, encourage your child to count in steps of 2, 5, and 10. Once they are confident with these, you can begin practising counting in steps of 3 as well.

READING COMPREHENSION Year 2 Reading Objectives

At Castleview (year 2 to year 6), we are using the Reading Renaissance program to monitor the children's reading:. It is a program that helps students improve their reading skills by reading books at their own level and taking quizzes to assess comprehension. It uses the STAR Reading test to determine a student's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which is a personalized range of books that are both challenging and interesting. When a student finishes a book, they take a short online quiz, and their results provide immediate feedback to both the student and teacher. It is important that your child reads their book in order to do the quiz and have their books changed.

How it works

  • Choose: your child selects a book at their appropriate reading level, which is typically within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), the range of books that are challenging but not frustrating.
  • Read: your child reads the book independently.
  • Quiz: After finishing, your child takes a short quiz on the computer to check their comprehension. The number of questions varies based on the book's difficulty.
  • Analyze: The program provides immediate results to your child and teacher.
  • Feedback: A passing score indicates comprehension.
  • Points: your child earn points based on how well they perform on the quiz and the book's point value, which is based on its difficulty and length.

Please note no comprehension homework given this week.

We would like to remind you that homework in Year 2 is designed to reinforce and practise the learning your child has been doing in class. It is not meant to be challenging or stressful, but instead to give children the chance to build confidence and show what they know independently.

Homework helps children to:

  • Consolidate key skills such as reading, spelling, and basic maths.
  • Develop good learning habits and a sense of responsibility.
  • Share their learning with you at home.

Please encourage your child to have a go on their own, they should be able to complete most tasks with limited support from you. If your child finds something particularly difficult, please just make a note for us rather than worrying or spending a long time on it.

Thank you for your continued support in helping to make homework a positive and enjoyable experience for the children.

Have a lovely weekend

from the Year 2 team.
